Signal Hill School Crisis Procedures
School Emergency Information for Parents/Guardians Brochure
Signal Hill School is deeply concerned about the safety of your child. Annually as required by Public Acts 94-0600, 95-1015, 98-0048,the district conducts at least three fire drills with the staff and students with one drill in collaboration with the local fire department(s). In addition, the district conducts 1 bus evacuation drill, one severe weather drill, and one law enforcement drill which can be completed when students are not present. The completion report of the drills are shared and reviewed by the Regional Superintendent annually. In addition, the safety procedures are reviewed annually by our first responders and adjusted as needed.
Signal Hill has a Crisis Committee which is made up of teachers, staff, and an administrator who regularly reviews our crisis plan to ensure that we are up-to-date on our procedures. We have meetings with the full faculty and staff to review those procedures or practices. We also discuss and practice drills with our students to be sure they know what to do in case of an emergency. In the beginning of each year we practice our fire, storm, and lockdown drills with the students. We then continue to review these drills throughout the year and, periodically, they are supervised by the first responders to get input on the effectiveness of our procedures.
In each emergency situation, we practice going to the assigned location, and we check attendance to ensure all students/staff are accounted for. For the safety of the students and staff routes, to any outside locations are not shared.
In the event of a real emergency, parents will be contacted via School Reach/SHS web connections (posted on the website and Facebook) once the students/staff have been accounted for. We know it is a stressful situation when emergencies occur, but please know that your child’s safety is our first priority. Once parents are contacted, there will then be instructions on where and when to pick up your student if that is necessary. It is important that we follow through with our process during this time to ensure all students are safe and accounted for at all times.
We do take your child’s safety very seriously so we do not share specific practices or safe locations in an effort to protect the children and the staff during any emergency situation.
If you have any additional questions regarding our safety plan, please contact the office and we can discuss your specific concerns.
Outside Recess Weather Guidelines
As a rule of thumb, we use the wind-chill as the best judge on if it's too cold to play outside. In general, when the wind-chill is 32 degrees and above, it's safe to be outside. Once the regular temperatures start to drop below 20 degrees Fahrenheit, it's best to stay inside. Recess is limited and can be shortened on colder days.
